The Mycenaean empire was one of the most
powerful known to antiquity, with a vast trading
network that spread throughout the
Mediterranean. The swift Mycenaean fleet carried
a vast variety of goods to every port from Egypt
to Athens. Mycenaean pottery, light and graceful,
set the standard for luxury. This superb spouted
vessel certainly shows that fame to be justified.
Most likely it held a high grade of olive oil
destined for an aristocratic table. The vessel itself
is a work of art, delightful to the eye and
pleasing to the touch. The pleasure we take in its
beauty we share with others who lived centuries
ago.
