| Description |
Just as Abraham was about to sacrifice his son Isaac to god, an angel appeared to point out a ram whose horns were tangled in the bushes. Abraham gratefully sacrificed the animal instead. This magnificent, curly-horned votive--regal as the heavenly Aries--also dates from the age of the Biblical patriarchs, and was offered as a gift to god. Perhaps it commemorated the sacrifice of Isaac, an event which might have occurred within living memory of when this figure was made.
