This striking bronze vessel overwhelms the
viewer with its elegance. Its beauty is greatly
enhanced by the two registers of floral motifs
that loop and swirl fluidly along the body of the
vessel. The use of elaborate floral patterns was
developed and popularized in near eastern art
and clearly provides a reference to its Biblical
origin, although it dates to the roman period.
The neck is textured with a ribbed pattern that
terminates at the circular lip of the vessel. The
simplicity of the ribbed motifs contrasts and
enhances the more complicated design on the
vessel's body. Perhaps this vessel was once used
to hold unguents, perfume, or other rare and
precious substance for someone with
discriminating taste. Its appeal for the
connoisseur of fine art certainly must have been
as strong then as it is now.
